Working Committee

The Working Committee of Indian Steel Association (ISA) acts as the consultative body for the smooth functioning of the association. Each Apex committee member nominates one representative from their firms to the working committee. The roles, responsibilities and activities of the Working Committee are determined by the Apex Committee, to whom the Working Committee is accountable. It is also entrusted with the task of periodically reviewing issues, concerns and challenges impacting the steel industry. The Committee also reviews and proposes the annual budget of ISA and is authorized to form Sub-committees on specific subjects.

The Working Committee meets several times during the year, to support and facilitate the effective functioning of ISA.

Mr. Chanakya Chaudhary
Vice President, Corporate Services

Mr. Chanakya Chaudhary joined Tata Steel in 1988 as Graduate Engineer Trainee in the Raw Material Division at Jharia, Dhanbad. During his stint in the Collieries division, he worked in various capacities in the Fluidised Bed Power Plant, Training Institute, Underground mine, Jamadoba Coal Washery etc. Subsequently he was transferred to Total Quality Management (TQM) (Business Excellence Group), wherein he was responsible for working with various divisions of Tata Steel for getting ISO-9000 certification, employee involvement in small group activities and preparation of annual quality improvement plans. He has worked as a lead assessor for Tata Group in its journey of Business Excellence and for JRD Quality Value Award. He was heading the Corporate Affairs office of Tata Steel at New Delhi as Chief Resident Executive and since 1st November 2013 he has been appointed as Group Director-Corporate Communication & Regulatory Affairs. In the new assignment he is now responsible for Corporate Communication and Policy Advocacy across the Tata Steel group.

Mr. Chaudhary, a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Mechanical. from BITS, Pilani, has undergone various prestigious management programmes like Young Managers Programme at INSEAD, France in 1997, Tata Group Executive Leadership Programme in 2007 conducted by Michigan Ross School of Business and Executive MBA from CEDEP, France in 2008-09.


Mr. S K Chakrabarti
Incharge and Head of the Department of Marketing

Shri SK Chakrabarti is at present holding the position of Executive Director (Marketing) and Head of the Department of Marketing, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant overseeing thefunctions of the entire Marketing Department. Prior to this assignment he held various positions such as Incharge of Planning & Despatch, Incharge of Special Steels, Regional Manager (East), Sr. Branch Manager (Pune) and also Incharge of International Trading Division.

He has nearly 37 Years of Public Sector experience and 25 Years of experience in Steel marketing. He is also associated with INSDAG (MOS) for their projects of steel extensive structures all over India and increasing of steel usage in the Rural market.

Mr. Naresh Lalwani
Head, Corporate & Regulatory Affairs

Mr. Naresh Kumar Lalwani is a Metallurgical Engineer from National Institute of Technology , Raipur and holds a Management Degree from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai . He brings with him over 22 years of rich experience spanning across functions like Corporate Strategy and Development, New Business Development, Project Management, Operations Management, Business Planning, Cost Analysis and Policy recommendations. At his present assignment at JSW Steel Limited he is heading the Corporate and Regulatory Affairs team.

Mr. Lalwani has comprehensive understanding of Global and Indian Steel Industry and wide exposure to Corporate Strategy related to Project Management, Green Field expansion, Technical due diligence, Mergers and Acquisitions, Business Planning, Cost analysis and Policy recommendations. He has successfully performed Technical and commercial due diligence for acquisition of steel Plants based in US, Europe and India and spearheaded cost cutting exercises successfully across the Organization at all the integrated steel plants of JSW Group.

He is a member of Managing Committee at ASSOCHAM, Mining Committee at FICCI, Manufacturing Council at CII and a Trustee at National Trust for Handicapped.

Outside of work he likes reading and traveling around the world.

Mr. Ashwani Kumar
Assistant Vice President

Mr. Ashwani Kumar is Metallurgical Engineer from University of Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee) of 1982 batch and working in Jindal Steel Power Limited as Vice President (Sales & Marketing) in Gurgaon.

He is having over 34 years experience in Indian steel industry with three largest integrated steel manufacturers namely Steel Authority of India (SAIL), ESSAR Steel Limited and Jindal Steel & Power Limited (JSPL) and also worked as C.E.O of Allied Strips Limited, Bahadurgarh (Haryana) based Cold Rolling Unit.

During his long career in Steel Industry, he has been involved in handling a diverse range of activities starting from Production of Steel, Technical Assistant to Managing Director, Product & Market development, setting up & operations of Stockyard/Service Centre and Sales & Marketing.

In Sales & Marketing he has closely worked with esteemed organization for development of steel grades in Segment such as Indian Railways, Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation (DFCC), Indian Public Sector organizations like NTPC, IOCL etc., Indian Defence establishments like Indian Navy, DMRL, NMRL etc., Line Pipe Segments (API category) like Jindal Saw Pipes, Automobile industry like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motors, Tata Motors and customers in Shipping industry such as Cochin Shipyard & Mazagaon Dock and many more.

He was also Team Member of group engaged in study of 1 year Project “India 2020” organized by International Iron & Steel Institute in 2006-07.

His career spanned of over 34 years started with Bhilai Steel Plant & SAIL CMO from Mar’83 to Apr’95, with Essar Steel Limited from Apr 95 to Oct 09 and with JSPL from Oct 09 to Oct 10 and Jun 12 till date. With Allied Strips from Oct’10 to Jun’12 as CEO.

Mr. Alok Sahay
Executive Director Commercial

Mr. Alok Sahay, Executive Director, SAIL has 35 years of varied experience in the steel industry. Attaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics (Honors), he joined SAIL as a Management Trainee in 1983.

He has held positions handling marketing and operations in various parts of the country.

His experience includes training on advanced logistics and marketing at the British Steel Corporation

As a visiting fellow to the Oxford University in 1999, during his 10 month tenure at Oxford he also researched and published a paper on the Impact of Privatization of Public Sector Utilities in Developing Countries.

During his five year tenure in International Trading operations of SAIL, he visited various countries for promotion of SAIL steel, resulting in record exports by SAIL which still remain unsurpassed.

He developed and headed the Defence vertical of SAIL. This was SAIL’s first experiment in joint product development with a customer, involving cross functional synergy of Plants, Marketing & the R&D establishments of both SAIL and Defence departments. During his tenure as Head of the Defence vertical, SAIL successfully developed and supplied steel for the new aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, leading to successful launching of indigenous warships.

As Executive Director (Commercial) of SAIL he heads the Defence & Railways vertical, the Market Analyst Group, Special Steels Group and the division for Trade and Economic Partnerships, apart from other responsibilities.

He has worked closely with industry & Government and is one of the core industry representatives who participate in advocacy on trade related matters on behalf of steel industry.

He has also represented India at international forums.

Mr. Vikram Amin
Executive Director- Sales & Marketing

Mr Vikram Amin is Executive Director-Sales and Marketing of Essar Steel India, a 10 million tonne integrated steel producer.

Mr Amin joined Essar in 1987 and has held leadership positions in several businesses of the group. He was the man behind Essar’s foray into the overseas contract drilling business, becoming the first Indian company to do so.

Prior to moving to Essar Steel India, Mr Amin was the Resident Director of PT Essar Indonesia, the largest downstream steelmaker in Indonesia. He pioneered steel retailing in India under the brand, Essar Hypermart, which serves the SME sector that does not have direct access to mill material. This model proved to be very successful and was replicated by other steelmakers. Mr Amin also set up a network of steel processing facilities for Essar Steel—the largest setup of its kind in the country—thus enabling the company to supply customised steel to discerning customers. Additionally, he is recognised for his contribution towards developing an export market for Essar Steel products, helping establish the brand in the international market

Mr. Vineet Saraf is currently heading the Marketing and Sales function in Tata Steel BSL, since April 2019. He joined F&A department of Tata Steel, Tubes division, in May'97, after completing graduation in Commerce, CA and Costing.

Since 2001, have assumed multiple roles in various capacities in marketing and sales of Tata Steel, Tubes division and have contributed in its journey of growth, more than trebling revenue since then.

During the last five years, as Chief of Marketing and Sales of Tubes business, have steered division's entry into New segments, customers and products, laying the foundation for an aggressive growth, in times to come.
